Uniform Patrol Division
Uniform Patrol Division is comprised of a Lieutenant, 4 Sergeants, 4 Corporals, and 10 Deputies. The patrol division is the first line of responders who respond to requests for assistance, such as emergency 911 calls. Some of the responsibilities of the patrol division are safeguarding the lives and property of all persons within Sussex County, responding to calls for service, enforcing criminal and traffic laws, conducting welfare checks, completing incident reports, conducting initial investigations, and completing crash reports.

Criminal Investigations Division
The Criminal Investigations Division is comprised of a Lieutenant and 3 investigators holding ranks from Corporal to Sergeant. The Criminal Investigations Division investigates all matters of serious nature. They assist in follow-up investigations for the patrol division and assist in obtaining search warrants, laboratory analysis, storage and preservation of evidence, conduct vice and narcotics investigations, and assist patrol when needed.

Communications Division
The Communications Division is comprised of a Lieutenant, a First Sergeant, 2 Sergeants, and 11 deputies. The Communications Division operates the E911 center and is often the first contact for a person needing assistance. Communications deputies answer 911 calls, dispatch calls for service, and coordinate with deputies and outside agencies. Communications deputies with the Sheriff’s Office are cross-trained for Jailor duties as well.

Jail Division
Jail Division is comprised of 2 Sergeants, 2 Corporals, and 6 deputies. The jail division is responsible for the safety and security of the jail and inmates held in the Sussex County Jail. They book in new inmates, conduct security checks, and assist in the transportation of inmates to the court and other facilities. Jail Division also assists Courts and Civil Process Division with Courthouse security duties.

Courts and Civil Process Division
The Courts and Civil Process Division is comprised of a Lieutenant, a Corporal, and a deputy. Court/Civil Process deputies are responsible for the day-to-day operation and security of the Sussex County Courts and all persons within, including the judges, court clerks, attorneys, inmates, and visitors. They are also responsible for serving and tracking the majority of all civil processes issued by the courts.

School Resource
The Sheriff’s Office has 3 deputies assigned as School Resource Officers to the 3 Sussex County Schools. The school resource deputies help ensure the safety of all of the students and faculty on a daily basis. They also conduct investigations into matters reported in the schools or involving students on or off of school grounds. They attend and provide security at school sporting events and any school function.
